Abstract
Edmund Husserl completed his doctoral thesis on the calculus of variations. However, he was neither certain about mathematical knowledge nor empirical (scientific) one. He dedicated his life to exploring an alternative method for “rigorous science.” He ended up with the “transcendental ego” as the ultimate seat of certainty. He studied the nature of self and experience and offered phenomenology as a way to go beyond appearance and penetrate into essence to find out the universal laws of logic governing the lived experience. His approach differs significantly from idealism, realism, and empiricism. It is aimed to be the foundation for all human knowledge, including scientific one.

In this webinar, we will explore Husserlian pure phenomenology along with Nursian mana-i harfi approach to see the crisis of Western sciences and meaning (as it was stated by both Husserl as well as Nursi) and to engage in intellectual discourse on the role of the human self in accomplishing certainty and meaning through “subjectively objective” knowledge. We will compare and contrast several Nursian concepts to the following Husserlian concepts: “intentionality,” “bracketing,” “transcendental ego,” “phenomenological reduction,” “Noesis vs Noema”, “natural attitude”, “epochē”, “epistemic ontology”, “epistemic justification”, “objectivity,” and “intersubjectivity.”
